Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal data DailySweden processes, why we use it and the choices available to you.

1. Who is responsible for your data

DailySweden is responsible for the personal data described in this policy. Questions and privacy requests can be sent to editorial [at] dailysweden [dot] com.

2. Information we collect

Depending on how you use DailySweden, we may process:

  • account information such as your name, email address, role and authentication details;
  • newsletter information such as your email address, signup source, consent, confirmation and unsubscribe status;
  • messages, correction requests, story tips and other information you choose to send us;
  • technical information needed to deliver and protect the service, such as IP address, browser type, device information, timestamps and security logs;
  • subscription or transaction information if paid services are offered, although payment-card details are handled by the payment provider rather than DailySweden; and
  • publishing records created when authorised editors distribute DailySweden articles through connected services such as Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn.

3. Why we use personal data

We process personal data to:

  • provide accounts, subscriptions and requested services;
  • send The DailySweden Brief when you have requested it and confirmed your email address;
  • publish journalism, respond to readers and handle corrections;
  • secure, maintain and improve the website and newsroom systems;
  • meet legal, accounting and regulatory obligations; and
  • protect DailySweden, its readers and the public from misuse or unlawful activity.

Under the GDPR, our legal bases may include performing a contract, complying with a legal obligation, pursuing legitimate interests such as operating a secure news service, consent where required, and the special protections that apply to journalistic purposes and freedom of expression.

4. Cookies and similar technology

DailySweden uses essential technology, including session cookies, where necessary to sign authorised users into the CMS, maintain security and deliver requested features. We do not use non-essential advertising or analytics cookies without providing the notice and choices required by applicable law.

We use Google Analytics only after you explicitly accept analytics. It helps us understand visits, page views, session statistics, approximate location, browser and device information, and how readers navigate the site. Advertising storage, advertising user data, Google Signals and personalisation remain disabled.

With the same analytics consent, DailySweden also counts an article read after the article has been visible for 10 seconds. We store only aggregate read totals by article and minute, without an IP address or reader identifier. Your browser stores the time of a recent read so repeated loads are not counted for 30 minutes.

DailySweden uses Google AdSense to select and display advertising. Before the AdSense script loads, we set Google's advertising storage, advertising user data and ad personalisation consent signals to denied. If Google shows an additional advertising-consent message, that choice is separate from the analytics choice described here.

When accepted, Google Analytics may set the first-party cookies _ga, to distinguish users, and_ga_<container-id>, to maintain session state. DailySweden limits these cookies to a maximum of 13 months without renewing that period on each visit; browser limits may be shorter. More information is available in Google's GA4 cookie documentation.

You can deny analytics in the initial notice. After choosing, use the persistent Cookies tab to review or change your decision. Choosing Deny tells Google that analytics storage is denied and removes accessible Google Analytics cookies. Your choice is stored in your browser together with the consent-policy version and time of the decision so that DailySweden can ask again after a material policy change.

5. When information is shared

We use service providers to host the website, store media and data, secure the service and distribute authorised social posts and deliver requested email. These providers may include Vercel, Neon, Resend, Google Analytics, Google AdSense, Meta and LinkedIn. They receive only the information needed for their role and process it under their own terms or our instructions, as applicable. We may also disclose information when required by law or necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. We do not sell personal data.

Article correction messages sent through Facebook Messenger are received and reviewed in Meta Business Suite; they are not submitted to DailySweden's application database. Meta separately processes Messenger information under its Privacy Policy. Please send only the information needed to assess a correction and do not send passwords, identity documents, private personal data, software or unsolicited attachments.

6. International transfers

Some providers may process information outside Sweden or the European Economic Area. Where data-protection law requires it, we rely on an adequacy decision, approved contractual safeguards or another lawful transfer mechanism.

7. How long information is kept

We retain personal data only for as long as needed for the purposes described above. Retention depends on the type of record, newsroom and legal obligations, security needs and whether an account remains active. We may preserve published journalistic archives where there is a continuing public-interest or freedom-of-expression basis for doing so.

Newsletter subscriber records are retained while a subscription is active. After you unsubscribe, we retain a limited suppression record so that we can honour the request and avoid sending further newsletter email.

8. Your rights

Subject to applicable exceptions, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal data, object to certain processing, or withdraw consent. Journalistic processing may be subject to exemptions intended to protect freedom of expression and information.

You may also lodge a complaint with Sweden's data-protection authority, the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY).

9. Security and children

We use reasonable organisational and technical safeguards appropriate to the information we process. No online service can guarantee absolute security. DailySweden is a general-audience news publication and is not designed to knowingly collect account information from children below the age at which they can lawfully provide it without parental authorisation.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our services or legal obligations change. The latest version will remain at this address with its revision date. Please also review our Terms of Service.
