Nuclear power projects can now be considered in several Swedish coastal and archipelago areas where special location bans previously applied. An amendment to the Environmental Code took effect on Wednesday, 15 July.
The change covers protected coastal stretches in Bohuslän, Småland, Östergötland and Ångermanland, among other areas described by SVT. It removes the blanket prohibition on nuclear facilities in those zones.
The amendment does not approve a reactor or bypass other safeguards. Any proposal would still need to be examined case by case under Sweden's environmental, nuclear-safety and planning rules, according to the government bill adopted by parliament.
Four applications for new nuclear projects have been submitted nationally so far, SVT reported, none of them on the west coast. Municipal politicians interviewed in Uddevalla and Stenungsund expressed both interest and caution, but neither municipality has an active siting process.
