On one night as I do on many, I sat down to watch the SVT flagship news program, Aktuellt. I try to never miss it for anything. On this particular day, I watched a report that would change my views on how the crime debate plays out in Sweden.
There were two young men providing access to a reporter on how easy it was to order marijuana like pizza and have it delivered to their house. The way the reporter talked about the men, and even felt comfortable around them, made me realize the other side of the crime conversation in Sweden.
We humanize the people who support crime and demonize those who perpetrate it. But the laws of economics, in this case, are quite simple. Where there is no demand it is impossible to have supply.
When we talk about the big bad criminals we also have to mention the sweet young men ordering marijuana like pizza with their mom sitting by the kitchen table.
Crime is rising in Sweden and in no way do we take any other position other than to condemn it categorically, but it should not be used to paint an incomplete picture.
The intersection of the crime debate with immigration concerns is the reason why it needs intellectual completeness. If the popular assumption is that immigrants who have failed to integrate are the ones that are perpetrating the crime, then we should also popularise who the consumers and enablers of this crime are.
