The Left party leader Nooshi Dadgoostar is breathing fire demanding details of the recently signed Türkiye deal which paves way for Sweden’s path into NATO.
“Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson must clear up what the government has or has not agreed with Erdogan on,” Nooshi wrote on her Twitter feed Thursday afternoon.
Sweden and Finland earlier this year submitted applications to join NATO following Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine.
Although there is a broad political consensus among the parliamentary parties regarding joining NATO, the Left party and the Green party have opposed this, saying the country should strive for demilitarisation instead.
Since all current member countries have to approve the admission of new members, Türkiye has opposed Sweden from the start saying the Nordic country “harbours terrorists”.
However, following extensive negotiations between Sweden and Türkiye, the latter approved the formal acknowledgement of Sweden and Finland’s application. This followed a deal struck behind doors. It is because of this deal that Swedish Prime minister Magdalena Andersson has come under fire from the party leader to disclose details of what Sweden agreed to.
“This situation is unsustainable,” added Nooshi, referring to utterances by Türkiye’s president Erdogan that Sweden should expel 73 “terrorists” to Türkiye.
