The United States has won the Women’s FIFA World Cup with Sweden putting up a spirited performance to end their campaign as third best in the world.
US successfully defended their cup in Lyon, France with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Netherlands who were competing in their first ever World Cup final.
Despite having held on for an hour, two goals came in quick, all inside eight minutes to ensure victory for the US.
Megan Rapinoe converted a penalty with Rose Lavelle unleashing a thunderbolt that made sure the US got it.
Sweden dismissed England 2-1 to win a Bronze medal in Nice.
The Swesih team was ninth when they walked into the pitch in France for the tournament and ended the campaign as the world’s third best after taking down Gary Neville’s team, a no mean achievement indeed.
“We have achieved so much,” said midfielder Kosovare Asllani. “No one thought we would take one of three Olympic spots nor that we would win bronze. We should be proud.”
